Rules of International Draughts

01

10 x 10 board

Unlike on a chess board we play on a 10 x 10 board as seen on the left here. We play on the dark squares only so there are 50 squares that can be used. The long diagonal starts on the bottom left side of the board.

03

Capturing

Captures are mandatory. A piece is forced to take, and even backwards as well. Some people might know checkers where you cannot take backwards. Also, a piece can only be captured once in the same move ! In international draughts that is a additional complexity to the game.

02

Moving pieces

A piece can only move forward in a diagonal direction. Once the piece has been moved you cannot move it backwards. So you need to think if your piece is safe.

04

Majority captures

A piece needs to capture the most pieces it can take! If there is a choice between capturing 1 or 2, you need to capture 2 pieces ! This is also another complexity that is added.

05

Promotion

When a piece reaches the other side, it gets promoted to a king. A king can move over longer distances on the diagonals, backwards and forward. However the same rule applies for capturing, a king must follow the majority rule as well.

06

Removing pieces after capturing

Pieces can only be removed from the board once the capturing shot is completely finished. So you cannot take pieces from the board as you are capturing, This is a very important rule and at times it can be decisive for the game.

These rules can be hard and new to most players, and some of them do not make much sense at first, eg. that 6th rule. If you come to the club these will all be very clear in a short amount of time.

There are some differences with checkers (typically the game is played on a chessboard and there are only 12 pieces) where pieces cannot take backwards and the majority rule is not part of the game.
