Inspiration for new players

This has been written by my draughts friend Jacques in New Caledonia. He has done a few years of training with me.

By Jacques (translated from French) :

It is difficult to find the right words to express all my gratitude. The creation of your draughts club is much more than a simple initiative, it is the fruit of your dedication, of your overflowing passion for this ancestral art. I feel honored to have had the chance to meet you on Lidraughts, and even more privileged to have benefited from your teaching and advice over the years.

Our first games of draughts were for me a mixture of enthusiasm and ignorance, where I pushed my pieces without any real plan or strategy. However, despite my repeated defeats, you were always there to encourage me, to share with me your knowledge and your experience. I still remember that famous game against you where, after a crushing defeat, I asked you if you had suffered in that duel, and your answer marked me forever: "No, I was two pieces up". At the time, I didn't realize the full depth of this statement, but it already revealed your mastery of the game, your ability to anticipate every move.

Over the years, you have been more than just a teacher to me. You opened the doors to a fascinating world for me, where each square of the draughts board conceals hidden treasures, where each move is the result of careful thought and an elaborate strategy. You spent hours explaining to me the importance of positional play, introducing me to classic combinations, passing on your knowledge and passion to me with generosity and patience. The 1500 exercises that you sent me, which you took the time to correct and comment on, were for me an invaluable source of learning and progression.

But beyond the technical education, you also gave me a life lesson. You taught me perseverance, hard work, and above all, respect for the game. I know that I will never be at your level, that draughts is much more than a simple hobby for you, it is a true passion, a second nature. And yet, despite our differences, despite our different levels of play, you have always been there to encourage me, to guide me on the path to mastery.

Today, as you realize your dream by creating your draughts club, I can't help but feel immense pride and deep gratitude towards you. Your students will have the inestimable opportunity to benefit from your teaching, your passion, and your generosity, and I am convinced that they will progress quickly under your caring tutelage.

In conclusion, I would like to say a huge thank you for everything you have done for me, for your dedication, your patience, and your kindness. I wish you all the success you deserve in this new adventure.

With all my friendship and sincere gratitude,

Jacques
